Hunger and Homelessness

A Community Place
Description: A Community Place is a non-profit organization that packs and distributes healthy sack lunches to the working poor and homeless in the USC area.  We create a safe, welcoming environment for students and community members to interact. We pack lunches every Thursday from 5-6 in URC 103.  We distribute these lunches Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11-1 in the courtyard of St Marks Lutheran Church, on the southwest corner of Vermont and 36th Place (across from University Gate 6).

Description: The mission of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is to eradicate sub-standard housing by providing simple, decent, and affordable shelter for families and individuals. Habitat for Humanity is a “hand up,” not “hand out” program. As a student chapter affiliated with HFHI, USC Habitat will work with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles to have a positive impact on the community in which we live.

USC Street Voice
Description: The purpose of Street Voice is to create a voice for the homeless community within the Los Angeles area surrounding the University of Southern California. We will advocate for local homeless shelters and non-profit organizations by promoting their volunteer opportunities on campus for USC students and by nominating a particular homeless entity each semester to be the primary benefactor of  our fundraising efforts. Our primary purpose , however, runs deeper-we aim to encourage and implement a sustainable approach to eliminating homelessness in Los Angeles. Through speaker series, volunteer events, and a biannual publication, we will increase student awareness and knowledge of homeless, thereby rendering this sustainability achievable. The organization serves as a community forum for USC students and the public to shed light on an often ignored but always prevalent issue within the community.
