Alternative Break Program
Description: The Alternative Break trips are a special part of the USC Volunteer Center, because a unique learning environment is created by taking a group of students, staff and faculty to a location and immersing them in a pressing social issue, community, and culture.

Alternative Winter Break Peru
Description: The heart of South American civilization lives on in a rich indigenous culture set admist stunning natural views, but beyond the beauty lies a stark reality. Despite recent economic growth, 50% of Peruvians live in poverty with almost 25% living on less than $2 a day. When an 8.0M earthquake struck the southern part of the country, the situation became more bleak. There is still much rebuilding that needs to be done. On our three-week service-learning trip to Peru, we will immerse ourselves in Andean culture, likely working in indigenous communities of Huancayo outside of Lima and Urabamaba outside Peru. With a focus on community development, we will be working on a wide variety of projects. We will likely be sweating over construction and beautification projects, so you will be able to look back on your trip and see some concrete accomplishments, while making personal connections with the locals, working in local orphanages and community centers
